Fuckyeahmusicalfilms’ Favorite Sequences » Nina, The Pirate (1947) Performed by Gene Kelly & cast
Vincente Minnelli was a genius. Gene Kelly was a genius. The Pirate (1947) is such an underrated film, I don’t care if audiences of the time weren’t ready for it. This sequence is exquisite eye-candy (the costumes! the colors!) and I love how the camera just follows Gene’s abundant energy as he moves from balcony to balcony. And that cigarette trick? Hot damn! The song is catchy and fun, Gene is in tight pants and looks too sexy in that mustache. I love this movie, I don’t care!
Judy’s Films!
THE PIRATE (1948)
I don’t care what anyone else says. I own this film because I loved it the moment I saw it. What’s not to like? It’s Judy being hilarious (and gorgeous) and Gene being his awesome dancing self (with a mustache that I really do enjoy…). Oh! And it was funny as hell! “Capucho!”
The original recording of Be A Clown from The Pirate, which I incidentally like so much better than the crappy stereo remix they have out there mainstream.
“Make Em Laugh” from SINGIN IN THE RAIN (1953) was heavily based on this song— so much so that they hardly tried to hide it!
It’s so wonderfully refreshing seeing Judy laugh during the production of this film. Makes me really happy =)
